Patterns are fundamental in thought, and pattern recognition is a major part of intelligence. Our understanding of the nature of patterns is essential to the philosophy and methods of science. Patterns manifest a few basic principles, which will be richly illustrated in this presentation, with diverse examples from nature. A perspective will be given regarding the importance of pattern principles as they relate to biology, evolution, technology, emergence, representation of information, and the modern paradigm of science.

Mark Edelman’s interests include the history of science and the nature of information, the latter of which he has studied for 25 years, along with related topics, for which he has established a website.
