Simone Weil (1909 - 1943)
What response does seeing human suffering demand of us? Filmmaker Julia Haslett seeks an answer in the life and work of controversial French thinker, activist, and mystic Simone Weil - a woman whom philosopher Albert Camus described as "the only great spirit of our time" and poet T.S. Eliot called "a kind of genius akin to that to saints." On her quest to understand Simone Weil, filmmaker Haslett confronts profound questions of moral responsibility within her own family and in the context of 21st century America. The result is an unforgettable journey into the heart of what it means to be a compassionate human being.
