Sunday Platform - Hugh Taft-Morales: Enemies and Empathy
Sunday, August 5, 2018 - 11:00am
Ceremonial Hall - 4th floor

In our minds, human beings both create images of the enemy and feel deep empathy towards others. We dehumanize those we label as threats, and share the feelings of those whom we embrace. How do we balance these two often-conflicting tendencies? Can we find a way to protect ourselves while de-escalating our own “fight or flight” reactions? Hugh TaftMorales explores these opposing poles of psychological frameworks for relating to other people and for their relation to Ethical Humanism.

HUGH TAFT-MORALES serves as Leader of the Philadelphia and Baltimore Ethical Societies and is President of the National Leaders Council of the American Ethical Union (AEU). Hugh previously taught philosophy and history for 25 years in Washington, D. C. He is on the Board of Peace Day Philly, and is a member of the clergy caucus with both Philadelphians Organized to Witness Empower and Rebuild (POWER) and Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development (BUILD).

This week’s shared charity is the Fourth Universal Society/Sanctuary Program (See July 8, above).
