In Loving Memory of Barbara Levenson

Friends and Family met on Sunday to remember Barbara.

Barbara Levenson (1933-2012)

Barbara was awarded a PhD in Sociology from Columbia University and worked for many years at the Bureau of Applied Social Research, the research arm of the Sociology Department of Columbia University. She also conducted research at the Public Health Department of Columbia. In the 1970’s, Barbara and her husband Bernie moved to Baltimore where she directed research for the Social Security Administration. When she retired, they returned to New York City. Sadly, Bernie was very ill. After his death, Barbara sought both comfort and purpose; she found them at the NY Society, and soon became an active member. Barbara was a driving force in every committee she joined from Membership and Sunday Program to Ethical Enrichment and the Board of Trustees. She generated new programs and worked tirelessly to support others. Barbara was intellectually engaged in a variety of areas and loved taking courses and reading. She was inspired by her studies and inspired others. Her latest contributions to our community life were Ethical Excursions and Spring Festival. She will be dearly missed.
